History of the Rising Sun
The Rising Sun pub in Pensford is a slice of living history. Once a bustling stop for stage coaches in the 17th and 18th centuries, it later hosted notable figures like clarinetist Acker Bilk and Robert Hunter of the Grateful Dead.
In 1968, the formidable River Chew flood devastated the village, submerging the pub's entire bottom floor. Amidst this, a royal morale boost came when Prince Philip stopped by for a pint.
Back in 1685, during the Monmouth Rebellion, rebel forces camped near the pub. The nearby Pensford Viaduct, built in 1873 for coal transport, echoes the village’s industrious past. It stands tall, a Grade II listed symbol, even as it watched the great flood halt train services forever in 1964.
The Rising Sun, alongside the viaduct, narrates tales of resilience and historic charm, making Pensford much more than just a quaint village.
